What Kids Around the World Eat at School

A photo essay from Today I Learned, about what kid eat at school around the globe.  It is easy to see the influence of culture on food and nutrition.  Those nations that have the oldest cultures seem to have the nicest foods, save for the very poorest nations.  How much should be spent, in time and money, on school food?  Does finer cuisine necessarily translate to higher grades?  Would love to here from others on this.

  1. It always astounds me that in one breath children are cherished and are our future, yet those who look after them are underpaid and de-valued and they are fed caca at school(and often at home). I can say with pride that my child's lunchroom supervisors have said that his lunches are the best. :)

  2. But what makes for good food at school? I would think whole grains, fresh fruit, dairy and lean protein. But in many parts of the world fresh fruit during the school year is simply not an option. I think the aim of lunches for anyone, but especially school kids, should be to provide good nutrition that gives them the energy to study but not fill them with the jitters. I would think staying away from heavy foods would be a good idea as well. But, of course, any food left uneaten isn't a very good choice either.

  3. It is unbelievable how much food is thrown out in your average school lunch room. I am also surprised by how many kids have a lunch box full of packaged snacks, not a single fresh item to be found.

What makes for good food at school? The same things that make good food at home! If you ask me, aside from the criteria you listed (which veggies are missing from the list :p), I would include;fresh food prepared with love, that takes taste and nutrition into consideration.

Sometimes I think it really is that simple.
